Every time I cross over from Rusafa (Baghdad, east of the Tigris) to Karkh (Baghdad, west of the Tigris), my eyes are attracted to a very long line of trucks carrying bricks and other building materials, waiting for their turn to unload in a location that is known only for its magical quality to the greater majority of Iraqis, a locatoin inside that fairyland, the Green Zone. It is said there are majestic theatres and luminous malls behind those illusive walls that are defended by US tanks and Asian security personnel. Some say there are five star hotels and casinos where sparkling wines are poured out into cut crystal goblets. Some say you would find a smaller version of any American city, its supermarkets and drive-in -take-aways complete with milkshakes. Is there an aquarium?? Why not! Is there a Disney Land?? Why not! McDonald's?? Of course! Because if the Americans are not building five star hotels, Disney Lands and malls, what have they been building, for several years now?
